River, Rainforest & Beach

This Borneo journey is a combination of 6 nights of exploration in Borneo, staying in the two best lodges in Borneo, followed by a week relaxing at the beautiful Gaya Island Resort.

You'll begin with 2 nights in Kota Kinabalu including a day trip to the Kinabalu National Park.

From Kota Kinabalu, you'll fly to Sandakan for a visit to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Sun Bear Sanctuary included.

From here you'll head straight off to the Kinabatangan River for two days of wildlife viewing in this magical part of Borneo. You'll head out in the mornings and evenings by electric boat in seach of wildlife along the riverbanks. You'll be staying at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, which is the best lodge in the Kinabatangan River area.

From Sukau, head to the Danum Valley for 2 nights at the award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge, the premier wildlife lodge in South East Asia. You have daily experiences included.

The second half of your Borneo adventure will be in the the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. This sizable Malaysian island has been protected as a reserve since the early 1920's.

Gaya Island Resort is a luxury resort offering some of the best accommodation in Borneo and is the ideal complement to a wildlife tour of Borneo.

As with all of our Borneo holidays, this one can be tailored to suit your interests, time and budget - so just let us know your preferences.

  • 2 nights accommodation in Sukau
  • 2 nights accommodation in Danum Valley
  • 7 nights accommodation in Gaya Island

Tour duration is shown in days and includes overnight flights. Hotel accommodation totals 13 nights, as listed above.

Abai Jungle Lodge

Abai Jungle Lodge is located about an hour from Sandakan and almost 50km from the mouth of the Kinabatangan River.

There are 24 rooms in the Lodge, all with attached bathrooms, ceiling fans, hot showers and netted windows.

The 500-800 metre long trails to the Jungle Bird tower are made from hard wood “Belian” and are flat in and out (no steep steps).

Plentiful birdlife, Silvered Langur, Maroon Langur, Hose Langur and even wild Orang-utan are often sighted here.

Very occasionally a clouded Leopard or a Sun Bear have also been sighted from the jungle trail.

Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge

The accommodation in Sukau is comfortable but not luxurious. We think it is in keeping with the location and the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge is a much better option than other lodges such as Sukau River Lodge.

Rooms are all en-suite with ceiling fans and hot showers.

There is a wildlife trail by the lodge along which birdlife, red-leaf monkeys and sometimes orangutans are spotted.

Tabin Wildlife Resort

The charming timber bungalows of Tabin Wildlife Resort come complete with private balcony and hot water shower, a real luxury in the forest.

A variety of birds, insects and even small mammals can be sighted quite easily within the resort which is set amongst the rainforest alongside the Lipad River.

Wildlife

Please note that as all the animals are in a wild natural habitat there is no 100% guarantee of seeing them.

It is almost guaranteed to see orangutans at Sepilok however and probosics monkeys are extremely common along the Kinabatangan River.

Other wildlife such as elephants are less common but are still frequently spotted, especially around Abai.

Hornbills are common and you would be unlucky not to see some and they are a magnificent sight, especially in flight over the canopy of trees.

When visiting Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary please take note of the park guides. Orangutans are curious by nature and don't think twice about waltzing off with unguarded items. Especially - don't take food into the park with you.

Note that the cruises along the river from Sukau are in electric boats.
